Red light
The contested question in a red light case is almost never the plate. It is the signal phase, the stop line and the moment of entry. The evidence has to answer those three, or the program spends its life in hearings.
What the evidence has to prove
Three questions, answered in the package itself
Red light programs have the longest history of public scrutiny of any automated enforcement category in the United States. That history is useful: it tells you exactly what the evidence package has to contain before anyone asks.
- Where was the vehicle when the signal turned red.
- How long was the yellow interval at that approach.
- Was the vehicle still in the intersection, and for how long.
Signal integration
Phase state read from the controller, not inferred from the image.
Stop line reference
Position established against a surveyed reference.
Right turn logic
Turning movements handled under the policy the agency sets.
Calibration record
Certificates attached to the case, with their validity dates.
Vehicle event evidence
Approach, entry and clearance images of the vehicle itself, with speed and position where the program records them.
Program design
Engineering first, then enforcement
An intersection with a short yellow interval or a poor sight line produces violations that a camera should not be issuing. We look at the engineering before recommending a site.
Interval review
Yellow and all-red checked against the standard before installation.
Sight distance
Approach geometry and obstruction assessed on site.
Signage
Placement and visibility documented and photographed.
Legal framework
What is authorized is not the same in every state
Authority, thresholds, signage and retention are set by the statute of each state and, in several states, of each program. What appears here is a description of how we operate, not legal advice.
Before anything else
We confirm what your jurisdiction is authorized to operate today.
Written into the program
Thresholds, signage, warning periods and retention are configured, not assumed.
Your counsel decides
We bring the operational picture. The legal call belongs to your attorney.
Send us an intersection
We will look at the engineering before we talk about equipment.
